What a privilege to be chosen by a relative or friend to be their newborn baby's godparent - a connection blessed by centuries of tradition. For children it means two adults care about them in a special way.
In many Christian churches godparents have clearly defined duties and obligations and are expected to be involved in the religious life of the child from the beginning, taking part in the ceremony when the godchild is baptized.
Godparents respond to the honor by giving gifts to the godchild on important occasions such as birthdays, graduations, first communions as well as Christmas. Think of the Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella" and other stories. The role of godparents is deeply imbedded and indeed parents will send pictures and notes marking the child's progress. It's a lovely relationship to be celebrated and cherished.
